Arbors have been garden features at least since the earliest days of recorded history. It is believed that the first arbors were created by planting rows of trees spaced evenly apart, and then grapevines, planted adjacent to the trees, were grown up the trees and woven together forming garlands from tree to tree.
Architectural arbors date at least from ancient Egypt. Though the terms have become almost interchangeable, early arbors were made of wood, while pergolas were at least partially constructed of masonry. The Ancient Romans constructed pergolas using both wood and masonry components, and large structures were build for shade over outdoor dining areas, as well as in garden areas, and were used as well to cover both vineyards and tombs.
Today, arbors and pergolas have been differentiated in other ways. Some say that arbors include seating. Arbors are also said to have lattice walls which are intended to be covered by vines,
while pergolas have vines trained up the posts.
